Biography

Andrea Chisesi was born in Rome in 1972. He moved to Milan, where he attended the Liceo artistico and the Politecnico.
In 1998 in Porta Venezia, he opened ‘Andrea Chisesi photographer’, a studio where he worked mainly on photography and began to perfect the technique that he himself would define as ‘fusion’ between painting and photography.
From 1998 to 2008, portrait photography will be the artist’s main activity, leading him to publish in prestigious magazines such as Vogue, Vanity fair, Max, Rolling Stone and to portray in his studio and on film sets personalities including actors, writers, world-famous musicians such as Harvey Keitel, Robbie Wiliams, Ken Follet, Steven Tyler and many others. In spite of his successes in the field of photography, Andrea Chisesi unceasingly paints his ‘Fusions’ between painting and photography, which are a great success and a succession of solo exhibitions affirm his talent.
In 2009, the well-known Rosenberg Gallery exhibited his works and included him in its auction catalogues.
In 2010, Zucchi, a well-known Italian textile brand, invited him to participate in an exhibition dedicated to the brand’s antique moulds, an experience that was repeated in 2012.
From this point on, Andrea Chisesi is present in the most important Italian exhibitions, including the 2011 Venice Biennale. His collection ‘Progetto Icone’ Santi armati e tatuati, realised in 2011 in collaboration with Nicolai Linin, was noticed by curator Martina Mazzotta who invited him to the Milan Triennale in 2012.
In the same year, Andrea Chisesi left photography to devote himself completely to painting and opened his own painting studio in Sicily in Syracuse.
Also in 2012, his first exhibition in Syracuse dedicated to ‘Fuochi d’Artificio’ (Fireworks), turns out to be the artist’s most introspective collection dedicated to his childhood and the memory of Sicilian folklore, with works representing the dynamism of the explosions and colours of fireworks, his mandala.
In 2013, he began international exhibitions in various cities: Miami, Zurich, Lugano, London.
In the same year he opened his atelier on the island of Ortigia, where he now works and resides.

Since 2014 his one-man shows have been hosted in institutional buildings in the most important cities in Italy; among them Cefalù in 2014 with the collection ‘Anime di Sicilia’ dedicated to Sicily, the place of his childhood spent with his father from Palermo; Rome in 2016 with the collection ‘4 levels’ a retrospective on his technique; in 2017 he became part of Luciano Benetton’s ‘Imago Mundi’ collection; in 2018 the exhibition at Castel Dell’Ovo ‘Street Home’ offers an insight into the culture of Naples and its myths.
At the Reggia di Caserta, the collection presented in 2019 entitled ‘Saligia’; in the same year he was awarded as ‘Excellence in Syracuse’ thanks to the ‘Air Art’ project with the following motivation: ‘the artist has installed works of art in the suburbs of the city as well as in the historic centre to create a temporary museum
under the open sky’.
As part of the Festival Nostos, dedicated to the traveller, again in 2019 Andrea Chisesi became the official artist of the prize donated to Giordano Bruno Guerri, who invited him to exhibit at the Vittoriale degli Italiani in 2021.
Again in 2019, he enters the collection of the Sheikh of Qatar who visits his atelier.

Painting technique

“Fusion”

The first “Fusions”, a term with which Andre Chisesi defines his painting technique, were born in 2004 purely from digital, as a sort of collage between images of pictorial works and his photographs, in the first fusions, the artist decides to superimpose photography to painting through transparencies, using light and shadow to add or subtract parts of the work.

In a second moment it is decided to imprint the photographic shot directly on the painting or on a series of material stratifications.

It uses various types of supports, canvases, road signs and cardboard that are prepared with Bologna chalk, acrylics, newspapers or posters torn from the street, layers of gold leaf paints, with the aim of creating a texture that will welcome the photographic image that Chisesi chooses to merge only after completing what it calls “preparation”.

From the moment the preparations are ready to welcome the image, begins a real imaginary project of overlapping and transparencies.

Thus was born the first fusion between painting and photography at first made in the dark room, then with the image imprinted on the painting and then with the first part of the fusion decides where and how to intervene to give greater power or balance to the artwork.

Fireworks

“The fires are my dearest memory as a child, when my father took me to his grandparents in Palermo for the holidays, I was fascinated by the explosion of color and the fireworks that I had never seen in Milan.

Life, like an artifice, amazes you and leaves you amazed, it is the instant of the maximum extension of the explosion, it is the dynamism of colors.

The moment you see its maximum splendor, the fire has already gone out and so is life. “

In the Fireworks there are in addition to the explosions of color small figures below that represent the man, the couple, the family or the people, characters character who assist the artifice of their life together, spectators of their own wonder.
